As divers we are constantly surrounded by fish - some of them are legal species anglers take from the surface, some are protected species that need help from humans to face a fighting chance. Given all this, why should one spearfish?
Underwater Hunting, or spearfishing, is a more sustainable practice than line angling. Like hunting, spearfishing allows a diver to select a target and take no more than the diver intends to use. By selecting mature fish, or fish that are in abundance, spearfishing helps balance fish populations and helps form a more sustainable ecosystem.
Diversions is committed to maintaining an environment we can all enjoy in a sustainable manner. For this reason we designed a course to teach underwater hunters how to safely and successfully help maintain these crucial environments.
Spearfishing is a great activity for Wisconsin waters. Knowing how to spearfish safely can also enhance dive trips to more tropical places - what's better than fresh seafood?
Wisconsin law currently allows spearfishing of both rough and pan fish. Game fish are prohibited. During class we will discuss and identify all legal species in Wisconsin.
The classroom portion of this class covers several key concepts and practices that are unique to underwater hunting. Some of the topics covered are:
