All aluminum scuba tanks are made out of aluminum alloys. Certain aluminum alloys have shown that they are susceptible to cracking after long periods of use. The tanks that contain these certain alloys (listed below) are often 20+ years old.
When cracks form in these tanks, they become dangerous to everyone who uses them. These cracks frequently can pass through hydro unnoticed; the most common method to find them is through eddy current inspections which often produce false-negatives.
The tanks are most dangerous to fill station operators, simply because they are pressurizing the tanks (divers de-pressurize them).
A friend of ours was tragically killed when an aluminum tank exploded at a fill station. Because safety is the most important consideration in everything we do, we feel that the benefit of filling a few more tanks a year does not outweigh the cost of an employee's life. More so, the cost of a new aluminum tank is minimal when put in comparison with the cost of a human life. It simply isn't worth the risk for us or for you.
